Hey Folks,
As many of you know, one hill I will die on is that we (collective we here..) owe it to ourselves to train and provide employees how to effectively manage their careers so they can thrive in a changing world of work.
This is a glaring gap in our education and societal norms in the western world, and often privileges those (like me) who have access to resources, networks and capital but puts other groups (underserved and marginalized) at a great disadvantage.
I’ve felt this way since I learned the hard way that managing your career, advocating for your interests, speaking up about your work, and building relationships were not spectator sports, and have devoted a good portion of my waking hours since then to share my learnings with anyone who would listen.
Earlier this year, I made one of my goals to find ways to teach people how to be effective in their jobs and careers so they could thrive in a changing world of work. Since work is still a place we spend a majority of our time, and I want people to have the mindset, habits, and practices to make work work for them.
That’s why I’m excited to partner with CoRise, to teach a course on how to strategically manage your career so you can stand out and thrive at work.
Who is CoRise?
If you’re not familiar with CoRise, they are an early stage startup founded by Coursera Alum that works to upskill employees at scale. (Read more here)
While they have primarily focused on teaching in-demand tech skills (ex: classes on AI/ML, Data Science and Data Analytics) they are piloting courses in other areas including mine, which could be the launch point for developing more courses in the career and leadership track.
Why I Chose to Partner with CoRise
I’ve been covering companies like Corise( see posts, here, and here) now for the past 18 months as I’ve tried to better understand how Graduate Business Education and what MBA programs can learn from the new world of how people learn, work, and grow their careers.
In my conversations with the CoRise team, I was impressed with the background and the learnings they took from EdTech 1.0 and how they are using that to align incentives amongst employers, learners, platforms, and instructors. They are a hungry group of entrepreneurial talent with a passion and curiosity for learning.
Their learning model, which prioritizes focused skill building, hands on projects and applied learning fits nicely with the approach I am already taking, and their willingness to try and test something new made the opportunity hard to pass up.
While they are a startup and trying a whole bunch of different things, I too, am a startup in my journey as a teacher, facilitator and entrepreneur, and appreciated an alignment around a willingness to test, experiment and learn
Program Details
This three week program will start in May, meet twice a week for 90 minutes, and cover what I think are the fundamentals of effectively managing your career and personal brand.
Through a series of live mini lectures, exercises, individual and group assignments and discussion, participants will learn the basic habits and practices needed to better understand themselves and their strengths and interests, cultivate their personal brand, advocate for their goals, and iteratively and intentionally exhibit the habits and practices for intentional and personalized career growth.
This course is broken down into three critical components:
Week 1: Managing yourself - Implementing tools and frameworks to improve your self-awareness and experimentation process for identifying your goals, and advocating for yourself, and your personal brand
Week 2: Managing Relationships - Learning how to scale your impact of your work and improve your visibility by connecting in meaningful ways with others such as peers, mentors, sponsors, and industry leaders
Week 3: Managing Your Career - Learning the consistent habits and practices for iterative and intentional career growth, and navigating your career inside of an organizational system
Each week, there is one class that is live lecture based, and one class that is devoted to a project and practical application. There will be a mixture of take home assignments and pre-reading as well.
